وترجع حالة الانحباس المطري إلى سيطرة مرتفع جوي قوي وعنيد على منطقة غرب المتوسط وغرب أوروبا كنتيجة لنشاط منخفضات شمال الأطلسي مما يؤدي إلى اندفاع و ابتعاد الكتل الهوائية الباردة والقطبية نحو شرق أوروبا وشرق المتوسط.
