Arab Weather - The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs and Holy Places announced on Thursday that the number of mosques operating with solar energy in Jordan has reached 2,862 mosques, representing 39% of the total number of mosques in the Kingdom.

The Secretary-General of the Ministry, Abdullah Al-Aqeel, stated that solar energy systems in mosques have contributed to saving about 4 million dinars annually, and reduced the electricity bill borne by the Ministry by 40%, according to Al-Mamlaka TV.

Al-Aqeel added that funding for installing solar energy systems in some mosques comes from the ministry and provincial councils. He stressed that the ministry seeks to install these systems in most of the mosques it supervises, which number 7,600 mosques across the Kingdom.

Providing mosques with renewable solar energy

The project to supply mosques with renewable solar energy aims to reduce electricity costs for the Ministry of Endowments, and connect the residences of imams and muezzins to the system when there is a surplus in energy, according to the applicable instructions. The ministry also previously explained that it seeks to provide renewable energy to all mosques through central solar power stations, noting that some mosques no longer pay electricity bills thanks to their reliance on solar energy.
