Arab Weather - Dr. Munther Hawarat, Assistant Director General at the King Hussein Cancer Center and Head of the Samih Darwazah Oncology Center, commented on the statements of the Minister of Health, Firas Al-Hawari, about the noticeable increase in cancer cases in the Kingdom during the past periods. He pointed out that this increase was a major reason for the government's decision to raise cigarette prices.

In a statement to the media, Hawarat explained that the government took this decision because smoking directly causes 35% of cancer cases in the Kingdom, with lung cancer alone accounting for 25% of those cases. The remaining 10% includes cancers of the larynx, pancreas, bladder, and kidney, for which smoking is a major cause.
Hawarat pointed out that quitting smoking could reduce cancer cases from 8,000 cases annually to about 6,000 cases, if the price increase succeeded in reducing tobacco consumption. He added that these measures are in line with what many countries around the world are doing to reduce cancer rates among their citizens.
It is worth noting that the Minister of Health, Firas Al-Hawari, stated in a previous press conference that the government had noticed an increase in the number of cancer cases in the Kingdom in recent years, which prompted it to raise the prices of cigarettes in an attempt to reduce these numbers in the future.
