A heat dome is an atmospheric phenomenon that occurs when high air pressure accumulates over a certain area, which leads to the retention of hot air in the lower layers of the atmosphere, resulting in a significant rise in temperatures. This phenomenon may continue for several days, leading to severe heat waves. .
The effects of the heat dome were absent from the atmosphere of Jordan and the Levant during the month of July 2024, thank God, as a result of the shape of the weather systems that prevail in the northern hemisphere. The latest outputs from computer numerical models, which simulate the movement of air masses and atmospheric systems for the Northern Hemisphere, especially the European continent and the Levant, indicate that the shape of the atmospheric systems appears remarkable as a result of the flow of upper basins with lower temperatures across the European continent towards the eastern basin of the sea. Mediterranean.
The upper weather systems coming from Eastern Europe are working to shift the upper subtropical high to the east, causing the heat waves and the heat dome to move away from the Levant and Jordan during the current month of July, thank God. Thus, the temperatures were not far from the normal framework despite their rise in some periods.
Returning to the climate record and reports issued in July 2023, meteorologists at the Arabia Weather Center noted that the effects of the heat dome were not far from the Kingdom as they were this year, as Jordan was affected by the heat dome even if it was not directly, and it caused two heat waves, one of which reached degrees The temperature is approximately 40 degrees Celsius in the capital, Amman.
The first heat wave was in the period from (12-16) July 2023, as the Ghor Al-Safi weather monitoring station recorded the highest maximum temperature during this period, reaching 46.2°C on 07/13/2023, and the Amman Civil Airport monitoring station also recorded the highest temperature. Maximum on the same day reached 38.6°C.
The second heat wave occurred in the period (23-29) July 2023, as the Ghor al-Safi weather monitoring station recorded the highest maximum temperature in this period, reaching 46.7°C on 07/25/2023, while the Amman Civil Airport monitoring station recorded the highest maximum temperature. On 07/28/2023, it reached 37.5°C.
Due to the Kingdom being affected by the hot air mass during most days of last July, 81% of the days of the month recorded temperatures higher than the general average for the same time of the year by about (3-7) degrees Celsius, as the average maximum temperature for the month of July was at Amman Airport. The civil temperature reached 35.0°C, an increase of 2.2°C above its general average, while the average minimum temperature reached 22.8°C, an increase of 1.8°C above its general average. The highest maximum temperature recorded at Amman Civil Airport was 38.6°C on 07/13/2023, while the lowest minimum temperature was 18.2°C on 07/07/2023.
