Weather of Arabia - In July 2023, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan witnessed the third hottest July in the last century, with record temperatures and extremely hot weather affecting the daily lives of citizens. As July enters, everyone is wondering whether July this year will be the fourth hottest month in the Kingdom, especially in light of the rapid climate changes that the region is witnessing.
Meteorological specialists at the Arab Regional Weather Center said that the heat dome phenomenon affected the atmosphere of the Kingdom during the month of July last year, in the year 2023, as the effects of the heat dome affected the atmosphere of the Kingdom and the Levant, causing temperatures to rise significantly. During the month of July 2023, the Kingdom was also exposed to two heat waves, the first of which was in the period from (12-16) July 2023, where the Ghor Al-Safi weather monitoring station recorded the highest maximum temperature in this period, reaching 46.2°C on 07/13/2023. It also recorded Amman Civil Airport monitoring station recorded the highest maximum temperature on the same day, reaching 38.6°C.
The second heat wave occurred in the period (23-29) July 2023, as the Ghor al-Safi weather monitoring station recorded the highest maximum temperature during this period, reaching 46.7°C on 07/25/2023, while the Amman Civil Airport monitoring station recorded the highest maximum temperature. On 07/28/2023, it reached 37.5°C.
Due to the Kingdom being affected by the hot air mass during most of the days of last July, 81% of the days of the month recorded temperatures higher than the general average for the same time of the year by about (3-7) degrees Celsius, as the average maximum temperature for last July was at the airport. Amman Civil, 35.0°C, an increase of 2.2 degrees Celsius above its general average, while the average minimum temperature reached 22.8°C, an increase of 1.8 degrees Celsius above its general average. The highest maximum temperature recorded at Amman Civil Airport was 38.6°C on 07/13/2023, while the lowest minimum temperature was 18.2°C on 07/07/2023.
The effects of the heat dome were absent from the atmosphere of Jordan and the Levant during the month of July 2024, thank God, as the Kingdom was not exposed to any heat waves during this month and the average monthly temperature dropped to 32.3°C, and the highest maximum temperature was in the capital, Amman, on 07/10/ 2024 and then reached 36.6 degrees Celsius.
This is due to the shape of the weather systems that prevail in the northern hemisphere, where upper basins with lower temperatures continued to flow across the European continent towards the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea, which worked to shift the upper subtropical air high towards the east, causing the heat waves to move away. The thermal dome in the Levant and Jordan during the current month of July. Thus, the temperatures were not far from normal, although they rose in some periods.
According to climate studies, July 2023 was ranked as the third highest average temperature in a hundred years, after 2017 and 2000, which ranked first and second.
Climatic studies also indicate that temperatures during July 2023 did not exceed the records for the month of July in the Jordanian climate record, as climate records indicate that the highest maximum temperature recorded in the Kingdom during the months of July reached 49.3°C on 07/25/2018 in Deir Alla area.
It is worth noting that the average temperature in July 2000 is considered the highest in the summer months in the Jordanian climate record in 100 years, as the average maximum temperature at the Amman Civil Airport monitoring station reached 36.3 degrees Celsius, an increase from its general average of 3.5 degrees Celsius, while the average temperature reached 3 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature is 23.6°C, an increase from the general average of 2.6°C.
God knows.
