Arab Weather - Experts at the Regional Arab Weather Center confirmed that temperatures in the Jordanian capital, Amman, scientifically do not reach 50 degrees Celsius, unlike some capitals in neighboring countries such as Baghdad and Kuwait. Summer in Jordan, no matter how high temperatures and heat waves occur, is remarkably less severe compared to neighboring countries such as Iraq, Kuwait, and eastern Saudi Arabia, where maximum temperatures do not reach record levels as is the case in the rest of the surrounding regions.
Height above sea level: Amman is located at an altitude of more than 700 meters above sea level, which results in more moderate temperatures compared to cities located at lower levels.
Mountainous terrain: The mountainous terrain surrounding Amman contributes to adjusting temperatures and reducing the intensity of the intense heat, as the temperature drops by one degree Celsius whenever we rise 150 meters above sea level.
Air currents: Air currents coming from the Mediterranean Sea contribute to moderating temperatures in Amman, as most days of the summer are dominated by northwesterly winds coming from the Mediterranean Sea, which are the prevailing winds due to thermal differences that make the air pressure high over the waters of the Mediterranean Sea and low in The Arabian Peninsula, where air moves from high pressure to low pressure and passes through the capital, Amman, from a marine source.
These factors combined make temperatures in Amman relatively moderate even in the hot summer months, compared to other capitals in the region.
Previously, an official air navigation report issued by Amman Civil Airport in the Marka area showed that the maximum temperature there was recorded on Monday, 8/14/2023, at about 43.7 degrees Celsius. Returning to the airport’s archival monitoring data, which extends back 100 years since the days of the Emirate of Transjordan, the recorded temperature is considered the highest ever since the beginning of recording climate records.
God knows.
