Arab Weather - Director of the Jordanian Seismological Observatory, Ghassan Sweidan, announced that since the beginning of 2024, the observatory has recorded about 138 local earthquakes, 260 regional earthquakes, and 2,024 earthquakes outside the region.

Suwaidan explained, in a statement to the media, that the regional events witnessed in recent years did not lead to any change in seismic activity and did not affect the movement of the tectonic plates that cause earthquakes, indicating that earthquakes occur as a result of the accumulation of pressures on the tectonic plates over time, which leads to the release of sudden energy that causes them to occur.

He added that regional activities, such as mining explosions monitored by seismic stations, do not affect natural seismic activity or plate movement. Suwaidan pointed out that Jordan's geological location on the Dead Sea Transform Fault, extending from southern Aqaba to Lake Tiberias, is the main source of earthquakes, as this fault forms the border between the Arabian Plate and the Sinai-Palestine sub-plate, and most seismic activity is concentrated along it.
