Arabia Weather - In June this year, Jordan witnessed a clear rise in temperatures, as Arab Weather Center experts stated that this month was one of the hottest months in the Kingdom. Specialists confirmed that the heat wave that swept the country contributed to recording high temperatures in many areas, while the month of July ended without any heat waves, thank God, despite temperatures higher than their climatic averages.

Heat waves were noticeable and strong during June 2024

After conducting studies, experts in the climate department at Arab Weather indicated that the capital, Amman, recorded temperatures that exceeded annual averages by a large margin due to heat waves that were noticeable and strong, reaching 40 degrees Celsius on some days. Experts confirmed that the southern and eastern regions of the Kingdom were most affected, as temperatures exceeded 45 degrees Celsius.

The specialists added that the heat waves that affected the Kingdom during this month came as a result of a high air system controlling the region, which led to the flow of dry, hot air from the African Sahara and the Arabian Peninsula. As a result, Deir Alla recorded the highest temperature in the world at 47.9 degrees Celsius, and the temperature in the capital, Amman, reached 40 degrees Celsius on several days, and the highest level of electrical load in the history of 14-6 was (33,990).

Absence of heat waves in July 2024 and a decrease in the average monthly temperature in the capital, Amman

The effects of the heat dome were absent from the atmosphere of Jordan and the Levant during the month of July 2024, thank God, as the Kingdom was not exposed to any heat waves during this month, and the average monthly temperature dropped to 32.3°C. The highest maximum temperature in the capital, Amman, was on 07/10/2024, when it reached 36.6 degrees Celsius.

This is due to the shape of the weather systems that prevail in the northern hemisphere, where upper troughs with lower temperatures continued to flow across the European continent towards the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea, which worked to shift the upper subtropical high to the east. Consequently, these conditions caused heat waves and the heat dome to move away from the Levant and Jordan during the current month of July, and thus temperatures were not far from the normal framework, despite their rise in some periods.

July 2023 will end with two heat waves due to the effects of the heat dome phenomenon on Jordan, and it is considered the third hottest month of July.

Meteorological specialists at the Arab Regional Weather Center said that the heat dome phenomenon affected the atmosphere of the Kingdom during the month of July of last year, 2023, as the effects of the heat dome affected the atmosphere of the Kingdom and the Levant, causing temperatures to rise significantly. During the month of July 2023, the Kingdom was also exposed to two heat waves, the first of which was in the period from (12-16) July 2023, where the Ghor Al-Safi weather monitoring station recorded the highest maximum temperature in this period, reaching 46.2°C on 07/13/2023, and it also recorded Amman Civil Airport monitoring station recorded the highest maximum temperature on the same day, reaching 38.6°C.

The second heat wave occurred in the period (23-29) July 2023, as the Ghor al-Safi weather monitoring station recorded the highest maximum temperature during this period, reaching 46.7°C on 07/25/2023, while the Amman Civil Airport monitoring station recorded the highest maximum temperature. On 07/28/2023, it reached 37.5°C.

Due to the Kingdom being affected by the hot air mass during most of the days of last July, 81% of the days of the month recorded temperatures higher than the general average for the same time of the year by about (3-7) degrees Celsius, as the average maximum temperature for last July was at the airport. Amman Civil, 35.0°C, an increase of 2.2 degrees Celsius above its general average, while the average minimum temperature reached 22.8°C, an increase of 1.8 degrees Celsius above its general average. The highest maximum temperature recorded at Amman Civil Airport was 38.6°C on 07/13/2023, while the lowest minimum temperature was 18.2°C on 07/07/2023.
