Weather of Arabia - The UAE, represented by the General Civil Aviation Authority, announced the adoption of a climate neutrality decision for the national aviation sector in the country, to be the first aviation sector in the region to adopt a decision on its commitment to climate neutrality, and the first sector at the state level to achieve an integrated commitment to this direction.

This decision will pave the way for all other relevant sectors to work out their necessary strategy and plans to reach climate neutrality by 2050.

The climate neutrality team for the aviation sector will work in the next stage to develop an integrated methodology and an action plan to start implementing the decision, and to set all related priorities. And its achievements within the agenda and work program for hosting, and the UAE being one of the pioneers in this field, the commitment to climate neutrality proves to the world the seriousness of the sector and its constant endeavor to invest in the best economic solutions that promote growth and environmental sustainability.”

What does zero neutrality mean?

Simply put, net zero emissions is reducing greenhouse gas emissions as close to zero as possible, while reabsorbing any remaining emissions from the atmosphere, for example by oceans and forests.

Why is net zero emissions important?

The science clearly shows that in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change and preserve a livable planet, the global temperature increase must be limited to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Currently, the Earth is about 1.1°C warmer than it was in the late 19th century, with emissions continuing to rise. To keep global warming to no more than 1.5°C - as required by the Paris Agreement - emissions must be reduced by 45% by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050.

How can net zero emissions be achieved?

The transition to a net zero emissions world is one of the greatest challenges humanity has faced. This will only be achieved by a complete transformation of how we produce, consume and move. The energy sector is the source of about three-quarters of today's greenhouse gas emissions and is the key to avoiding the worst effects of climate change. Replacing polluting energy from coal, gas and oil with energy from renewable sources, such as wind or the sun, would significantly reduce carbon emissions.

In 2021, the UAE announced its quest to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 - as the first country in the Middle East to announce this type of initiative , and to set a road map for an integrated approach to work to achieve sustainable economic development that integrates climate action and ensures commitment to the goals of the Paris Agreement, and represents a motivator and catalyst Regionally and globally to raise the ambition of climate action.

In conjunction with the decision, the General Authority of Civil Aviation established a specialized working group aimed at developing a climate-neutral decision for the aviation sector. The team consists of representatives of a number of strategic partners from local governments, airlines, airports, Masdar, and ADNOC.

This decision comes to confirm the sector's commitment to the strategic objectives of the International Civil Aviation Organization "ICAO" to reduce international emissions, and the climate change resolutions recently adopted at the 41st General Assembly of the organization, which was held in October 2022, and also emphasizes the active participation of the UAE in the efforts of society. the international community in the next stage in order to develop future plans and programs that would maintain the sector’s growth in light of its efforts to reduce emissions and adopt a balanced ecological economic system.

You may also be interested in: <a href="https://www.arabiaweather.com/ar/content/%D9%85%D8%A4%D8%AA%D9%85%D8%B1-... will Climate Summit decisions change our lives?
