Weather of Arabia - Dr. Abdullah Al-Omari, President of the Saudi Society for Geosciences, attributed the causes of the earthquake that occurred today at 12 noon in the region between Qassim and Hail to excessive water withdrawal over the past decades. He also pointed out that the intensity of rain in recent years filled the gaps and cracks in the ground. More than what the sedimentary rocks could bear, which led to rocks falling and sounds being heard as a result of rock collapses and their release near the surface of the earth in the form of sound waves that were felt and heard.
Dr. Al-Omari revealed a big surprise, pointing out that earthquakes that occur at a depth of less than 5 kilometers are often the result of human actions on the environment, such as bombing operations or withdrawing or pumping water or oil.
He added that this type of earthquake had previously occurred 30 to 40 years ago in the area between Al-Qassim and Hail, as well as Al-Majma'ah, and several places in the central region, in what is known as the flat area or the Arabian sidewalk.
This afternoon, the stations of the National Seismic Monitoring Network at the Risk Center of the Saudi Geological Survey recorded an earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale at a depth of 5.8 kilometers, which was felt by the residents of Qassim and Hail and lasted for a few seconds.
