Aqaba..the second top 3 global green destinations

Weather of Arabia - The city of Aqaba won second place as one of the best sustainable green destinations in the world, as a result of the outstanding efforts it has made in the field of protecting the environment and confronting climate challenges.

According to a statement issued by the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority today, Thursday, this was announced during their participation in the ITB Tourism Trade Fair 2024, which is held annually in Berlin, Germany, in the presence of the Chairman of the Authority’s Board of Commissioners, Mr. Naif Hamidi Al-Fayez.

On the sidelines of the exhibition, Mr. Nayef Hamidi Al-Fayez signed an agreement with the Green Destinations Organization, represented by its president, Albert Salman, and in the presence of the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Mr. Makram Al-Qaisi. This agreement aims to pave the way for the city of Aqaba to compete for the title of the best international tourist destination, as a result of its reliance on many sustainability standards within the programs of the Green Destinations Organization.

The city of Aqaba proudly advanced in the first 15 criteria within the success story of the Aqaba Bird Observatory, in cooperation with the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, as it has become an important eco-tourism destination rich in biodiversity. This was done by re-using wastewater to make it suitable for impure uses, in a country suffering from a severe shortage of water resources globally. As a result of these tireless efforts, the Aqaba Bird Observatory was successfully able to qualify for the list of the top 100 tourist destinations characterized by sustainable tourism standards in the climate and environment category.

In addition, the city of Aqaba achieved another success by being selected for the list of the top six stories of sustainable tourism destinations globally, as it was once again selected as one of the top three destinations selected by an international panel of specialized judges. In addition, it received the public vote to win the Public Opinion Award as your favorite success story.

It is noted that the signing of the agreement with the Green Destinations Organization aims to enhance cooperation in implementing the green growth strategy, which aims to guide and empower the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority towards developing a roadmap for sustainable tourism at the global level. These efforts include seeking to obtain a certificate proving the quality and sustainability of Aqaba as a tourist destination, and competing effectively at the global level in this regard.
