Japan: 5 dead, the death toll from the floods in the country

ArabiaWeather.com- Today, Sunday, relief teams in Japan found a fifth body in the northern Tokyo area, and are still searching for 15 other people who were missing after the floods that hit the area.

Local media said police found the body of an unidentified man in a car that had been swept away by water in Tochigi.

The public television network said 1,800 rescuers, including firefighters, police and military personnel, were still working to try to find the missing persons.

Large parts of Josu City, Ibaraki Prefecture, have been under water since a dike collapsed on the Kinugawa River last Thursday. The search for the 15 people still missing was halted late Saturday night and resumed Sunday.

Firefighters also resumed their work rescuing people stranded in still-flooded parts of the city, as heavy rains also damaged neighboring Miyagi and Tochigi prefectures, killing four people.

Meteorological officials expect heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms in some parts of the wider region from Sunday evening until nightfall, with the advancing rain front.

It is noteworthy that the heavy rains led to these floods, which are the most dangerous in decades, and more than five thousand people were forced to spend the last night in evacuation centers, where about four thousand houses were flooded.
