ArabiaWeather.com - The ancient city of Petra, located in Ma'an Governorate, south of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is distinguished by its rock-cut architecture and the system of ancient water channels. It is called the "Pink City" due to the pink color of its rocks.

The city was founded in approximately 312 BC, and was the capital of the Nabataeans kingdom. And it occupied a distinguished place and position in those ages, as its location on the Silk Road and the Mediterranean for the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Palestine and Egypt played an important role in controlling trade between the civilizations of these regions and their inhabitants.

The "Pink City" is 225 kilometers south of the capital, Amman, in the Petra District of Ma'an Governorate, to the west of the desert road that connects Amman and the city of Aqaba on the Gulf of Aqaba coast.

It was discovered by the Swiss orientalist Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 and selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
