The incident occurred on the Chinese border, where Chinese customs discovered six sealed bags in his pants containing a variety of snakes, including milk snakes, western hogs, corn snakes, Texas rats and bull snakes.
The man tried to use the green corridor to evade inspection, which is a corridor designated for people who do not carry goods that are publicly declared. When his pants were searched, officers discovered live snakes that had been illegally hidden.
Although the snakes were not venomous, some are considered exotic to China, potentially violating Chinese biosafety laws. The smuggler will be tried according to the law, with no specific punishment announced yet.
China is a major destination for the global illegal wildlife trade, with reports indicating that Hong Kong is a major re-export hub in this type of trade due to weak tracking systems.
