Etna volcano...a new powerful eruption

Arab Weather - The explosion of the famous Etna volcano led to the rescheduling of flights in the city, as most of the departing flights were canceled and some incoming flights were diverted to other airports in Sicily. Air navigation to and from the Italian island of Sicily was disrupted due to the volcanic eruption, which prompted the authorities to close Catania Airport. International Airport due to the dense cloud of smoke that reached a height of 8 kilometers. The airport administration explained that air navigation will resume as soon as the ash stops falling.

Airlines and volcano

The airport administration stressed the need for passengers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport. In general cases, airlines can give passengers compensation, such as offering a new flight or allowing a refund if the flight is delayed more than 3 hours. While in the case of natural obstacles, such as a volcanic eruption, they do not bear responsibility. But in most cases, airlines will endeavor to transport passengers to their final destination. In this context, it is always useful to have travel insurance that entitles the passenger to claim reimbursement in unforeseen cases.

Traveling to Sicily remains safe, with the majority of hotels and tourist accommodation operating as usual. Mount Etna's location and its danger

Mount Etna is located on the eastern coast of the Italian island of Sicily. This volcano is considered the most active volcano in Europe and has witnessed intense activity over the past five years. Despite its frequent eruptions, lava has not reached nearby villages for more than two centuries. The volcano has more than 200 craters, and when one of them explodes, volcanic ash falls on the city of Catania and many surrounding towns and villages. Although this causes inconvenience to residents, it is usually not a problem for visitors.

Even in the event of an eruption, many walking and trekking trails remain safe, but it is legally necessary for visitors to have a qualified local mountain guide.
