ArabiaWeather.com- A student at the College of Engineering at George Mason University, USA, managed to invent an unconventional fire extinguisher that does not work with water or foam, but relies on sound to put out fires.

The technology that the two students, "Vit Tran" and "Seth Robertson" reached, is based on shedding sound waves on the flame to expel oxygen atoms from the place of the fire, and thus extinguish it immediately.

The two students experimented with extinguishing the fire using sound waves with a frequency ranging between 20,000 and 30,000 Hz. They did not succeed in achieving the required, and they tried several other frequencies, until they succeeded at a frequency between 30 and 60 Hz.

The new fire extinguisher, which the researchers reached, consists of a cylinder whose bottom is connected to a loudspeaker that generates sound waves at the required frequency to expel oxygen atoms. This device was able to put out small fires, but it has not been tested so far on a larger scale and in real fires.
