Arab Weather - Unstable weather conditions differ from depressions, as they are different weather systems in terms of their nature of formation and accompanying effects. Everyone must be aware and prepared for the risks of heavy local rains that come with sudden weather fluctuations during this type of condition, but are unstable conditions in the Kingdom's climate considered normal?
During the transitional seasons, the Kingdom is affected by weather systems that bring thunderstorms, which are different in nature from depressions, and are scientifically called atmospheric instability, which are considered normal climatic phenomena. The region is affected by multiple weather systems, most notably the humid westerly winds coming from the Mediterranean Sea, which lead to the formation of cumulus clouds and rainfall when these cold air masses meet the warm currents coming from the Arabian Peninsula.
Experts at the Arab Weather Center point out that the climate in various regions of the Middle East is sometimes exposed to more severe weather fluctuations due to global climate factors, such as global warming, which causes disturbances in the usual weather systems, which can lead to irregular periods of rain or unusual increases in temperatures.
These phenomena fall within what is known as “global climate change,” which increasingly affects the frequency and severity of atmospheric instability worldwide.
Instability occurs when cold air in the upper atmosphere meets warm or hotter air in the lower atmosphere. This meeting coincides with the presence of sufficient moisture in the atmosphere, especially the structural layers. When this meeting occurs over a certain area, what is known as cumulonimbus clouds are formed, which grow vertically in the atmosphere. These cases are characterized by being local in nature, meaning that the clouds are formed internally and the rain clouds disappear in the same area affected by them or extend to other areas and then disappear.
Unstable weather conditions are characterized by irregular rainfall. Rain may fall in one area, while a nearby area experiences no rain or light, negligible rain, and the weather may be sunny and clear. They are characterized by the lack of comprehensiveness in the distribution of rainfall or even its intensity. Areas throughout the influence of the condition may not experience any rain due to the irregularity in the distribution of rainfall. It is difficult for forecasters to accurately determine the locations of rainfall. These conditions are complex, and on the ground they are either developing or declining, so caution must be exercised when they affect it. These conditions are considered dangerous, especially the strong ones, because they cause large amounts of rainfall to fall in narrow geographical areas, which leads to the formation of torrents and floods.
Cases of atmospheric instability are accompanied by several weather phenomena. These phenomena include cases of varying severity, including strong, medium, and weak. Perhaps the most prominent accompanying weather phenomena are the following:
God knows best.
