The main reason for the formation of dissolution craters, including the Shihit crater, is the chemical dissolution processes in limestone formations (karstic formation), and their subsequent collapse. It is not the only one in Oman. There are rumors that the crater was formed as a result of a meteorite falling from the sky, and that some houses collapsed in it when it was formed, but no traces of that were found at the bottom of the crater.
The crater is located in the village of Shehit, 3 km west of Wadi Darbat. It is a major landmark in the Wilayat of Taqah. It was named after the wormwood tree that is widespread in the region. The crater is more than 22 meters deep in its southern and eastern parts and 30 meters in its northern and western parts.
Inside the hole there are different types of trees, and some types of birds and reptiles live in it, so explorers must be careful when going down to the bottom of the hole. There are also footprints of carnivores at the bottom, and it is not known exactly how these animals managed to reach the bottom of the pit, according to what was mentioned in the guide book to the Oman Caves.
Dhofar Governorate is characterized by a unique climatic phenomenon that transforms the entire region into a tropical paradise, in what is called the autumn season in the summer, and the autumn season is a term given to the period when the monsoon winds blow “monsoon” laden with mist and light rain, which contributes to low temperatures, Fog envelops the hills, the nature is colored, and the green is sweeping the plains, in an imaginary scene.
The autumn season usually extends from mid-June to the end of September, which is an important attraction, especially for the residents of the Arab region who live in hot summer weather.
