Arab Weather - The Intertropical Zone (ITCZ) is considered one of the pillars of the global climate system, as it forms the changing boundaries that separate the trade winds from the two hemispheres. This zone fluctuates throughout the year, moving north in the summer and south in the winter, becoming the driving force behind many of the weather phenomena that we witness in the Arab world during the summer, as its summer expansion brings with it rain and thunderstorms to several regions.
The Intertropical Zone (ITCZ) is a climate zone that results from the meeting of the northeastern trade winds from the Northern Hemisphere with the southeastern trade winds from the Southern Hemisphere. This meeting causes air to rise, causing cloud formation and heavy rainfall.
In the Arab world, the tropical break mainly affects the southern regions such as Sudan, Yemen and parts of Saudi Arabia. During the summer, the tropical break moves north, bringing seasonal rains to these regions. This can lead to heavy rainfall and sometimes flooding.
The effects of the tropical break include 11 Arab countries in the summer:
1. Sudan
2. Yemen
3. Saudi Arabia (especially in the south)
4. Sultanate of Oman (especially the Hajar Mountains).
5. UAE
6. Somalia
7. Djibouti
8. South Egypt
9. Southern Libya
10. Southern Algeria.
11. Mauritania
In winter, the tropical break retreats southward due to the cold weather in the northern hemisphere. This retreat means that the areas affected by it in the summer experience significantly less rainfall or no rainfall at all, especially Sudan and neighboring areas.
God knows best.
