Arab Weather - On Wednesday, Sweden recorded its lowest January temperature in 25 years, reaching minus 43.6 degrees Celsius in the far north, a cold wave that also affected neighboring Finland and Norway.

"To put things in context, this is the lowest temperature recorded in Sweden in January since 1999," Matthias Lind of the Swedish National Meteorological Agency told AFP.

This temperature was measured at the Kvikyuk Anriarka station in the northern part of Sweden. “This is the lowest temperature ever recorded at this precise location since measurements began” at the site in 1888, Lind noted.

Temperatures below -40°C were recorded at several other stations in northern Sweden, including Lapland. In a funny statement on the Swedish TV website, Linda said: “I ordered a ready-made meal yesterday, and after 30 minutes of walking, the Coke froze.”

Although the region is accustomed to very low temperatures, the recent cold snap has led to the suspension of the activities of local bus companies, and the local railway company Vy announced on Tuesday that it had canceled all trains north of Umeå for several days.

Finland is experiencing a cold wave

Neighboring Finland is suffering from rail traffic disruptions due to the cold wave, as a seasonal record of -38.7 degrees Celsius was recorded in the Sami region on Tuesday evening.

The southwestern city of Tampere saw water pipes freeze, cutting off water for about 300 people on Tuesday.

In Helsinki, where temperatures are around -15 degrees Celsius, the extreme cold did not cause disturbances, and one resident said: “I really like it. It all depends on the state of mind, I think.”

A severe cold snap is expected over the weekend in Norway, as temperatures in the capital Oslo could drop to -27 degrees Celsius this weekend, according to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

Heavy snowfall in the south of the country caused chaos, with schools closed and flights cancelled.
