The Afghanistan earthquake kills 120 people and leaves 1,000 injured

Weather of Arabia - The Disaster Relief Authority in Afghanistan said that the death toll from the earthquake that struck today, Saturday, in western Afghanistan, with a magnitude of 6.3, rose to about 120 dead and 1,000 injured.

Musa Ashari, head of disaster management in Herat province, told Agence France-Presse, “So far we have counted more than 1,000 wounded, including women, children and the elderly, and at least 120 people have died.”

The United Nations provided an initial toll of about 320 dead, but later said that this number was still being verified.

According to a report from the American Institute of Geophysics, the peak of seismic activity was located 40 kilometers northwest of the city of Herat, and then the peak expanded rapidly at 4 points with magnitudes of 5.5, 4, 7, 6.3, and 5.9, respectively.

About 1.9 million residents live in Herat, according to data from the World Bank. A journalist confirmed to Agence France-Presse that the city’s residents felt when the ground trembled around 11:00 am (06:30 GMT).

Natural Disaster Management Services spokesman Mullah Jan Saiq said landslides occurred in rural and mountainous areas.
