The earthquake was centered north of the central city of Puebla de Saragosa, which is located south of the capital, Mexico City, one of the most populous cities in the world.
Millions of residents fled to the streets immediately, fearing the collapse of buildings and aftershocks.
Pictures and videos posted on social media showed a state of back-and-forth between citizens, dozens of homes were damaged, and fires broke out.
According to medical reports, the number of victims so far is estimated at dozens.
