Scientists: The amount of water in the ground exceeds the bodies of water

ArabiaWeather.com - A group of scientists said that it appears that the Earth's interior contains huge amounts of water, stored by a rocky layer of the Earth's crust mantle at depths ranging from 410 to 660 kilometers in the Earth's interior!

This water is associated with the molecular structure of two minerals in the mantle rock layer, which is characterized by its unique ability to retain water like a sponge, and these two minerals are called "ringodeite" and "wadslite".

Steve Jacobson, professor of geophysics at Northwestern University, believes that this discovery may change our ideas about the composition of the Earth ! He said, "These quantities of water may be either equal to or more than the amount of water combined in the oceans."

He added, "What we are talking about is no longer liquid water at such great depths. The weight of hundreds of kilometers of rock and the temperature rise of more than a thousand degrees Celsius work to analyze water into its basic components. It is water that cannot be extracted and is not a source of water anyway."

He continued, "The water descended into the mantle layer of the earth's crust, associated with minerals, during the formation of the earth's tectonic plates, which is a slow and complex process that included the movement of huge rock slabs, which contributed to the formation of the earth's surface."

When the minerals associated with these waters reached certain depths, they dissolved through what is called "drying out and water separation", which contributed to the formation of the magma layer.

In a study published in the journal Science, the researchers presented evidence that this also occurs at depths in the mantle and in the "transition zone" between the upper and lower layers of the mantle.
