About 1,000 Americans are hospitalized each year with severe forms of West Nile virus, which is transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. About 1,500 more are diagnosed each year after symptoms appear, while experts estimate that up to 80% of infections in the United States go undetected.
There is no vaccine or specific treatment for West Nile virus, and most cases are mild, causing flu-like symptoms and a rash. However, in about 1 in 150 cases, the virus can reach the brain and nervous system, causing serious infections such as brain swelling or damage, and can be fatal. About 100 people die each year in the United States from the virus.
Virus activity typically peaks in August and September. As of Aug. 20, 216 cases have been reported this year in 33 states, including 142 cases that affected the nervous system, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
