Arab Weather - A group of 77 pilot whales died after stranding on a beach off the northern coast of Scotland. A local rescue group believes that this incident is one of the largest mass stranding incidents in Britain in recent years. The British marine life saving organization Divers Marine Life stated that 12 Of the whales were still alive when discovered, but were eventually "euthanized" due to their inability to refloat themselves.

A British marine life saving charity said in a statement late Thursday:

“Unfortunately, the remaining 12 pilot whales were euthanized due to their deteriorating condition after the long hours they spent stranded on the beach.”

Their prolonged presence on the beach resulted in "crushing injury due to their weight and the high probability that they inhaled water with the incoming tide." They also drowned in the sand when the tide swept over them and were unable to float back, the charity added.

Unclear causes and repercussions of the accident

There are no clear indications as to why the whales were all beached, she said, adding that the organization would try to recover as many whales as possible for post-mortem examinations and when the BDMLR initially found the whales after a report early Thursday, they had been stranded for several hours.
