It is the capital of the province of Matera, located in the Basilicata region of Italy, and is proud of its cave dwellings known as "Sassi di Matera", which is a well-preserved historical landmark in the rock and one of the most important World Heritage sites and tourist attractions in southern Italy.

Matera is a relatively large city, and the old city is one of its most attractive suburbs for visitors. Directly outside the old town, you find the Sassi di Matera houses carved into the limestone rocks. The Sassi is located on both sides of the valley.

On the northern side, there is the Sasso Barisano neighborhood, which has been partially developed commercially to contain a number of offices, shops and residences, while the Sasso Cavioso is located on the southern side and is the most historically interesting.

Getting to Matera is easier than Bari in the Puglia region, where Ferrovi Apollo Lausanne (FAL) operates its trains from Bari to Matera city centre, with trips departing every hour or two, with an hour and a half time to reach.

If you are coming from Alberobello, the most convenient way is by car, but there are also shuttle services.
