Arab Weather - In meteorology, winter officially begins on December 1st of each year. It is determined based on climate patterns and the annual temperature cycle.

Division of climatic seasons

Meteorologists and climatologists divide the seasons into equal groups, each lasting three months, based on regular changes in temperature.

For winter, it includes the three months: December, January, and February.

During this period, temperatures are relatively close, and show regular changes in line with winter characteristics.

This division helps in studying climate and analyzing seasonal data accurately and regularly.

When do the four seasons begin in meteorology?

In meteorology, each season begins on fixed dates based on the annual temperature cycle:

1. Spring: Starts on March 1st.
2. Summer: Starts on June 1st.
3. Autumn: Starts September 1st.
4. Winter: Starts on December 1st.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed:

Summer begins in December, and winter in June.

Dividing the seasons according to fixed dates allows for accurate statistical calculations, making it easier to compare climate data for different seasons.
Climate scientist Derek Arndt explained in a 2014 interview with The Washington Post that it’s more convenient and logical to work with data for a whole month rather than parts of it. And our daily lives are governed by monthly calendars rather than astronomical seasons.

Different dates for the start of the semesters

It can be said that each chapter has a beginning and an end:

1. Climatic calendar, based on months.
2. Astronomical calendar, linked to the movement of the sun, solstices and equinoxes.

Both systems are valid and the use of each depends on the desired goal.
