In the details, as a result of the continued position of a strong air elevation over the center, west and south of the European continent, the extension of that elevation north pushed a very cold air mass from the Scandinavia region / Northern Europe directly towards the eastern Mediterranean through southeastern Europe and Turkey, and this coincided with the presence of an air depression To the north of Egypt, which worked on the deepening of this depression and its rapid movement to the east to be concentrated with the night hours of 12-26 over central Syria, and at that time the rains intensified, which were accompanied by strong thunderstorms and heavy hail showers over the heights, as well as active winds that exceeded 100 km in gusts / hour in the high mountain elevations and the desert.
And with the morning hours of 12-27, the precipitation gradually doubled in the north and center of the Kingdom and turned into intermittent snow with minor accumulations that did not exceed 5 centimeters in the Sweileh area, and about 20 centimeters in the Ajloun Mountains. While an unforgettable snow storm blew on the heights of the southern shrine and the mountains of Tafila and Al-Sharah and accumulated more than 80 centimeters in the heights of Al-Rashadiya and Shobak and more than 50 cm in the peaks of the southern shrine, and at that time the snow reached the high mountains surrounding Aqaba with a clear drop in temperature.
The heavy snow caused sudden closures of all roads in the south of the Kingdom, which stranded thousands of citizens and foreign tourists, especially to the city of Petra, who were then on the roads of the Shobak Heights.
With the personal intervention of His Majesty the King, he ordered the Armed Forces / Arab Army to immediately assist those affected in the south of the country, after the local authorities represented by the Ministry of Public Works and the Petra Region Authority were unable, through armored vehicles, personnel carriers and helicopters.
With the evening hours, the snowfall turned to sporadic in all regions of the Kingdom, except for the south of the capital, Amman, the city of Madaba, and northern Karak, which witnessed a renewal of snowfall, with accumulations approaching 10 centimeters.
And with the night hours, the temperatures dropped in a record way, reaching about -13 Celsius below zero in the Shobak heights, and about -4 Celsius in the northern and central highlands of the Kingdom, including the high areas of Amman, and freezing prevailed in all regions of the Kingdom except for the Central Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Aqaba.
It is noteworthy that the lowest temperatures continued to be below -5 degrees Celsius in Al-Sharah Mountains, where it experienced a second snowfall on New Year's Eve, and about 8 centimeters fell in Al-Shobak.
