Arab Weather - Our memories at the "Arab Weather" Center take us back 33 years, specifically to the famous New Year's Eve of 1992, when the atmosphere was completely different from what it is now.

Experts said that on this day 33 years ago, the Kingdom was under the influence of a snowstorm in every sense of the word. The Kingdom was exposed to the influence of a very cold and polar air mass, which led to snowfall on all the highlands of the Kingdom amidst very cold weather.

Watch the following video documenting the famous snowstorm:

Analysis of the weather system that caused the snowstorm in the Kingdom

Weather forecasters at Arab Weather said that archival data indicates that the cause of the snowstorm was the rush of a very cold polar mass directly from the North Pole towards the east and southeast of the European continent a few days before the snowstorm. In addition, archival data indicates that a strong high pressure system was tightly controlling most areas of the European continent, especially its center and south, which led to the continued decline of the polar mass towards the eastern Mediterranean basin.

On New Year's Eve, a low pressure system formed around the island of Cyprus, accompanied by an air mass of polar origin, and the Kingdom began to be affected by the beginning of the low pressure system in the form of heavy rain and strong winds.

In the early hours of the morning of the first day of 1992, a cold polar air mass rushed behind the depression, causing the depression to intensify in all regions of the Kingdom. Temperatures dropped to nearly zero degrees Celsius, and a snowstorm blew across the various highlands of the Kingdom, continuing until January 2, 1992, leaving behind large and record-breaking snow accumulations exceeding half a meter in some mountainous highlands.
