A 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan

Weather of Arabia - The northeastern region of Afghanistan was exposed to a violent earthquake on Thursday, with a magnitude reaching 6.4 degrees , according to reports issued by the American Geological Survey. Reports confirmed that residents of the capital, Kabul, and even Islamabad in Pakistan felt the earthquake.

The US Geological Survey stated that the epicenter of the 6.4-magnitude earthquake was located in the Gurm area in Badakhshan Province, located in the mountainous Hindu Kush region, and the earthquake occurred at an approximate depth of 200 kilometers before 14:00 (GMT 09:30). It was felt by the residents of Kabul about 300 kilometers from Jorm, and despite the severity of the earthquake, there have been no reports so far of damage or injuries.

It is also worth noting that Afghanistan is frequently exposed to earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush region, located near the connection points of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

In October 2023, the country witnessed a series of earthquakes that resulted in the death of about a thousand people, with magnitudes ranging between 4.2 and 6.3. Several months later, thousands of people are still living in camps due to the destruction of about 10,000 homes, according to reports from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The most violent earthquake to hit Afghanistan in recent years was in 1998, when it struck the provinces of Takhar and Badakhshtan in the northeast of the country, resulting in the death of five thousand people. These geographical conditions increase the frequency of earthquakes in the region, which reinforces the need for preparation and taking precautionary measures to reduce human losses.
