Arab Weather - Since the beginning of this summer, the Mediterranean Sea has been witnessing severe marine heat waves, which has caused a gradual rise in the surface temperature of the water, during which it has exceeded the climate averages by more than 5 degrees Celsius, especially in its central part. However, weather experts at the Arab Weather Center are following up on computer modeling that indicates a change in the shape of weather systems and the flow of cooler air towards the surface of the Mediterranean Sea in the coming period.
In detail, weather experts at the Arab Weather Regional Center said that the latest advanced computer outputs show a change in the shape of weather systems in the northern hemisphere, as a cold air mass is rushing through the various layers of the atmosphere at the end of this week and until the middle of next week towards large areas of the European continent, especially its center and south, coinciding with the control of a strong high pressure system over the southwest of the European continent.
With the changing shape of weather systems and the undulation of the polar jet stream, it is expected that cold or cooler air will cross the surface of the Mediterranean Sea (especially the western and central Mediterranean), which has been suffering from long periods of marine heat waves. As the cooler air crosses towards the surface of the waters that have been warming recently, weather disturbances will intensify in Europe and North Africa, specifically the Maghreb countries, with an increase in the chances of developing Mediterranean storms if all suitable weather conditions come together.
Meteorologists at the Arab Weather Center said that the rise in the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea leads to increased evaporation processes and injects large amounts of water vapor into the atmosphere, which increases the humidity of the air above the sea. This humid air can cause the formation of dense clouds and thunderstorms, while crossing the cold upper basins due to the sharp temperature differences that occur between the upper basins and the water temperature. Also, the large temperature differences between the sea and the adjacent land can enhance the ascending and descending air currents, which increases the atmospheric instability in the countries of the European continent, especially its south and northwest Africa.
It is known meteorologically that the greater the temperature differences, the more severe the atmospheric disturbances are, and during them high-altitude thunderclouds are formed, which bring various atmospheric phenomena such as severe hailstorms of large sizes and very heavy rainfall within a short period of time.
Weather experts at Arab Weather indicated that these very warm and humid weather conditions in the Mediterranean Sea may be a fertile environment that contributes to the formation of Mediterranean storms (Medicanes), which are similar to tropical storms and hurricanes in terms of structure and accompanying weather phenomena, but occur in the Mediterranean region.
Mediterranean storms are tropical cyclone-like weather phenomena that occur in the Mediterranean Sea. The name "medicane" comes from the combination of the words "mediterranean" and "hurricane". These storms have characteristics similar to tropical cyclones, such as calm eyes and strong winds that revolve around the center. The sea temperature is the fuel for this type of weather to form, but it requires special weather conditions such as the separation of the cold upper trough from the general jet stream circulation and its long stay over the water to begin to acquire tropical-like characteristics. The passage of cold air over the warm waters also draws attention to the Mediterranean Sea and the weather patterns that may result in the medium range.
In this context, weather experts at the Arab Weather Center indicated that it is not possible to determine the effects of the arrival of cooler air to the Mediterranean Sea at this time, but it is likely that its effect will be reflected in the form of a change in temperatures and a decrease, especially early next week, and an increase in humidity with the appearance of low clouds and perhaps an increase in wind speed. We will provide you with the details as soon as they are issued, God willing.
God knows best.
