Weather of Arabia - Scientists in Canada monitored a giant wave that broke the world record, with a height of 58 feet (17.6 meters), off the coast of Vancouver, and this rare giant wave is recorded once every 1,300 years.
The scientists indicated that the high wave broke the record for the highest water wall recorded in November 2020, and the height of the wave, which was parallel to a four-storey building, was measured by a buoy that was floating in the ocean, able to track certain movements caused by such strong currents.
Such a wave is called a "rogue wave" or extreme, because its size is usually twice the size of the surrounding waves, and it is unexpected because it often comes from different directions from the prevailing winds or waves in the area of its occurrence.
Such strong waves may represent a great threat to ships, boats and oil platforms, and the difficulty of predicting their occurrence increases the level of their danger, as they can appear suddenly in the form of a surface wave, and they can affect with tremendous force.
Therefore, Marine Labs has allocated 26 buoys in the oceans around North America to monitor such waves, and plans to double this number by the end of this year.
The phenomenon of rogue waves is still a topic of research in the oceanographer community because there are many "supposed" and unconfirmed theories for the cause of formation, but there are specific areas prone to the formation of these rogue waves, namely:
