Weather of Arabia - The Suez Canal Authority announced that a collision occurred between a container ship and a bridge in the canal’s navigational channel on Sunday, and although the accident occurred, it did not cause any impact on navigation traffic.
The Chairman of the Authority, Osama Rabie, stated that four tug boats were called to assist in the process of towing the ship “ONE ORPHEUS” after it lost steering as a result of a malfunction in the ship’s rudder, which led to it colliding with the Ahmed Al-Mansi Bridge while it was crossing the canal as part of a convoy on its journey from Singapore to the Netherlands. .
Rabie explained that the ships that were behind the disabled ship were instructed to stop immediately after the main navigation control center received notification of a defect in the ship’s rudder and loss of guidance, and tugboats were moved immediately to assist in the towing process.
The dimensions of the disabled ship are 336 meters in length and 46 meters in width, and it carries a payload of 101 thousand tons. The process of attaching the cables of the tugboats to the ship in preparation for the towing operation took place after ensuring the integrity of its structure.
In a reassuring message, the Chairman of the Authority confirmed that navigation in the canal would not be affected by this emergency incident. He reported that all ships coming from the northern direction continued their normal passage, and navigation traffic coming from the southern direction was regulated after diverting the crossing of ships from the new canal to the original canal.
Rabie confirmed that the authority possesses the necessary experience and capabilities in the field of rescue, and has the necessary navigational and technical insurance capabilities to deal efficiently with potential emergency situations.
