Weather of Arabia - A British couple warned of the dangers of keeping reflective surfaces in direct sunlight after a small makeup mirror caused a fire inside their home. On July 18, Sam Wilkinson (48 years old) and her husband Michael witnessed a strange fire in their home in Rochester, Kent in the United Kingdom. Sam spoke to the media, saying:
“She never thought this would happen.”
In the details of the incident, she said that she and Michael were at home when they noticed a disturbing smell. Michael recalled, saying: “I was working in the office, which is located under the room that caught fire, and I smelled a burning smell, like burnt bread, and I checked the fan and went down to see if anyone was cooking.” "Then I heard the smoke alarm go off upstairs." Panicking, Michael ran upstairs to wake Sam, they ran out of the house, and called the emergency services.
Two fire trucks arrived and put out the third floor fire, and the fire team was also able to rescue the family cat. Fortunately, while many items in the bedroom were destroyed, the fire was largely contained thanks to a closed door, which prevented it from spreading to other parts of the house.
Firefighters revealed that the alarming cause of the fire was sunlight that bounced off a small makeup mirror , igniting the room's curtains. Sam said:
“We only redecorated the room a few days ago, so we weren't sure why.” She added: "When the firefighters told us that the cause was the mirror, we did not believe it at first and now we know that anything reflective or shiny near the window can lead to a fire."
The couple shares their ordeal to warn others and remind them to move reflective items away from direct sunlight.
Sam said: “Our advice now is to be careful and educate your family members about the risks. It is a simple thing that can be prevented, but it can have devastating effects.”
