Arabia Weather - One of the important terms that must be known is the term atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric pressure is defined as the weight of the air column affecting a unit area, and it extends vertically from sea level to the end of the atmosphere. It has several units used to express atmospheric pressure values, and several devices. It is used to measure atmospheric pressure, and there are lines that show these values on maps. These lines are isobars, or as they are known as “isobar” lines, which are important in weather forecasts.

What is "Isobars"?

They are lines that connect all places or points with equal atmospheric pressure. These lines are drawn on surface weather maps, to be able to identify and know the distribution of different pressure systems, such as air depressions, air highs, etc., where the air depression is symbolized by the letter “L”. The high altitude is marked with the letter 'H'.

The wind moves in lines almost parallel to the isobaric lines, and the distances between the isobars have a direct relationship in explaining the wind speed. The greater the distance between the isobars, the smaller the pressure gradient, and in this case the wind speed is lower.

However, if the distance between the lines of equal pressure is small, the pressure gradient is large, and therefore the wind speed is greater. Therefore, the wind speed is inversely proportional to the vertical distance between the lines of equal pressure.

-Factors affecting atmospheric pressure

1-The amount of water vapor present in the air

The amount of water vapor in the air is inversely proportional to atmospheric pressure

2-Temperature

The amount of atmospheric pressure is inversely proportional to temperature

3-Height above sea level

The amount of atmospheric pressure is inversely proportional to the height above sea level

Units of measurement used to express atmospheric pressure values

Millibars - hectopascals

-It is important to know the atmospheric pressure at sea level, as its value is 1013.25 millibars.

-Devices used to measure atmospheric pressure

1- The barometer 2- The barograph
