Canada: Creating lenses to measure blood glucose

ArabiaWeather.com - A professor of biochemistry engineering at the University of Western Ontario, Jin Shang, invented contact lenses that change color when the blood sugar level changes, with the support of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation to develop more applications and creative ideas.

This invention aims to help diabetic patients who need to draw blood to check the level of sugar in the blood, in other words, this new medical invention can eliminate the need to draw blood to monitor glucose levels.

The color change of the lenses to indicate different levels of sugar is caused by nanoparticles implanted in contact lenses, which interact with glucose molecules in the liquid substance produced from the tear duct.

This invention consists of three elements:

Soft contact lenses that encapsulate electronics.

A very accurate sensor that detects the level of glucose in your tears.

A thin chip and an antenna, which receives and sends information to change the color of the lens.
