Brigadier General Abdel Jalil Abdel Rahim, a spokesman for the Sudanese National Civil Defense Council, said that 83 people have died since the start of the rainy season, according to the Associated Press.
And a previous toll published a few days ago spoke of the death of 77 people.
Dozens of villages in Al-Manaqil Governorate in Al-Jazira State in the center of the country were flooded and caused great destruction, forcing the authorities to declare the governorate a disaster area.
The floods cut off the road linking the cities of Al-Qurashi and Al-Manaqil, which made it difficult for the residents to flee.
In his speech to Al-Hurra website, Brigadier General Abdel Jalil Abdel Rahim, the official spokesman for the Civil Defense, attributes the large number of deaths as a result of torrential rains to the movement of people inside cities during the flow of torrents and floods, which led to their drowning.
He pointed out that the most affected states in Sudan were the Nile River, Gezira, South Darfur, South Kordofan, and Kassala.

Heavy rains and flash floods between 16 and 19 August displaced more than 2,500 people in Al Manajil locality, Al Gezira state, and the displaced are sheltering in government schools and playgrounds.
Heavy rains continued on August 19 and affected 17 other villages in Al-Manajil locality. The floods cut off the road from Wad Madani to Al-Manajil, impassable in a few areas due to the floods. The rainy season usually begins in Sudan from June and continues until September, with peak rains and floods observed between August and September.
Since the start of the rainy season in May, an estimated 146,200 people in 14 Sudanese states have been affected by torrential rains and floods. In 2022, more than 460,000 people are expected to be affected by floods in 2022.
Forecasts in the Arab Regional Weather Center indicate that cumulus clouds with tropical characteristics will continue to form over different regions of Sudan, specifically the southern governorates, during the coming days, resulting in very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, which means the continued chances of torrential rains and floods.
