Establishment of Dibeen Forest Reserve

In 2004, the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature established its nature reserve in the Dibeen forest area in northern Jordan. This reserve extends over an area of 8.2 square kilometers of mountainous areas, covering part of the natural habitat of Aleppo pine and oak trees. The Aleppo pine trees in this region are considered among the oldest and largest trees in the Kingdom, and represent a distinctive feature of the natural landscape. This region constitutes the southeastern geographic borders of this type of forest on the globe. Dibbin is considered one of the driest areas in the world where Aleppo pine can grow, with an average rainfall of about 400 millimeters per year.

Dibeen forests

Dibbin forests ranked first on the priority list of sites in need of protection, according to the 1998 Protected Areas Review Study. This area had been overlooked in the original report published in 1979. Studies later established that Dibbin is considered the best example of protected areas. Aleppo pine and oak in the area. Dibeen Forest extends over an area of more than 60 square kilometers, and its height ranges between 500 and 1000 meters above sea level. The physical and age composition of the forest is uniquely diverse, with trees of varying ages and sizes. This diversity is enhanced by the presence of valleys that lead to variations in moisture levels and soil conditions within the forest.

The reserve is located in the middle of a complete forest, where tree species are distributed according to the heights of the forest. In lower terrain, Aleppo pine is the dominant species, with some patches containing only perennial trees of this species. In the medium terrain, the Aleppo pine and oak pattern prevails, and this pattern extends over most of the reserve’s area. In the higher terrain, the evergreen oak succeeds as the dominant species, with some patches of deciduous oak on the upper slopes. Other types of trees are widespread, such as maples, pistachios, and wild olives, while the forest floor is exceptionally characterized by the presence of orchids and other types of plants associated with forests. According to the latest vegetation study, the ecosystem of Dibeen Forest Reserve supports the presence of 517 plant species.
