Arab Weather - A new study issued by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) showed that climate change has exacerbated the catastrophic effects of Hurricanes Milton and Helen, which hit US states, including Florida, and caused widespread destruction.
Hurricane Milton hit Florida on Wednesday evening after rapidly intensifying, bringing high waves, major flooding, and high winds. Analysis shows that climate change has increased rainfall by 20-30%, exacerbating coastal flooding.
Hurricane Helen, which hit the United States in late September, killed more than 200 people. The study found that such storms are now twice as frequent as they were before global warming.
The study also noted that the winds generated by Hurricane Milton were 10% stronger, increasing the destructive force it brought with it to land.
Meteorologists at the Arab Weather Regional Center said that climate change leads to an increase in the intensity of tropical cyclones through the rise in ocean temperatures, as cyclones derive their energy from the heat of the water. As temperatures increase due to global warming, cyclones gain more energy, leading to stronger and more destructive cyclones. In addition, rising temperatures increase the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, which increases the rate of rainfall with cyclones, thus increasing the risk of flooding.
Climate change is also accelerating the intensification of hurricanes, making them more powerful and more difficult to predict and adequately prepare for. This rapid intensification increases the risks to affected areas. Sea level rise due to melting polar ice is also contributing to increased flooding from hurricanes, even those that are not exceptionally strong.
Furthermore, studies have shown that powerful hurricanes (category 3, 4, and 5) are becoming more frequent due to climate change. These hurricanes cause widespread destruction and damage, especially in coastal areas, making their impact even more catastrophic due to factors associated with global warming.
God knows best.
