Due to severe turbulence, 30 passengers were injured

Air Europa announced that the plane was on a flight from Madrid to Montevideo when the accident occurred in the air, according to what was reported by foreign media.

The turbulence was so severe that parts of the plane's roof collapsed and one of the passengers flew and hung above the luggage compartment, and was later lowered, according to what circulating videos filmed by the passengers showed.

• Flight diversion

The Spanish company reported on the "X" website (formerly Twitter) that flight UX045 was diverted to Natal Airport in northeastern Brazil on its way to the capital of Uruguay. She added that the passengers who sustained injuries were "receiving attention."

• Air turbulence

An Air Europa spokesman said the plane, with 325 passengers on board, encountered turbulence over the Atlantic Ocean when it was about to reach the Brazilian coast. The plane landed normally and was received by a fleet of ambulances.

• Injuries

Airport officials indicated that some passengers required medical assistance and were taken to the nearest hospital. A local medical team explained to Brazilian media that they treated at least 30 passengers of different nationalities, and 10 of them were taken to hospital. The team also added that patients hit their heads during the unrest and suffered injuries including skull fractures and facial wounds.

The incident comes weeks after a Singapore Airlines plane experienced severe turbulence over Myanmar, leaving dozens injured and a British man dead. It is noteworthy that severe weather disturbances are rare, but recent studies have shown that climate change can increase their risks.
