Violent storms and torrential rains caused rivers to burst and form flash floods at an unexpected speed, and two in the Gard (Occitanie) district were lost after their car was washed away in the floods.
French media reported that more than 400 mm of rain - equivalent to 400 liters of rain per square meter - fell within a few hours.
Videos and photos taken by locals in the area show the water rising along the banks of rivers in seconds. In Andouz (Gard), where the water was so strong that it carried a pickup truck and caused severe flooding in the center of the village.
Restaurants and businesses, as well as homes, have been destroyed as the water level rises, and firefighters are using boats and helicopters in rescue operations.
