Arab Weather - Jerash, known as the " Pompeii of the East ", is an ancient Roman city with a rich cultural heritage. It is considered one of the few cities in the world that has preserved all its archaeological landmarks to this day. Its squares, paved streets, columns and theaters still bear witness to the Greek and Roman eras. Visitors to Jerash are greeted by the Great Gate with its three arches, built in honor of the Roman Emperor Hadrian when he visited the city in 129 AD. Jerash was one of the cities of the Decapolis, a federation of ten Roman cities founded in the first century BC. Visitors can explore the city’s structures, theaters, baths, and streets lined with towering columns. Jerash also contains remains dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Umayyad, and Abbasid periods, confirming that the city has been inhabited for more than 2,500 years.
The Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts is one of the most prominent arts and culture festivals in the Arab world. The festival is held annually in late July and early August, and attracts many Arab and foreign visitors to watch artistic, musical and theatrical performances held in the city’s archaeological sites. The festival hosts Arab and international musical and theatrical groups that perform on the open-air Artemus and Northern Theaters.
The Jerash Festival is distinguished by its upscale events that are in line with Arab customs and traditions, and also offers special shows for children. Visitors can easily reach the festival site, either by their own cars or by buses that operate between Amman and Jerash at a low cost.
His Majesty King Abdullah II begins a visit to Jerash Governorate today, Tuesday, as part of his tour of the Kingdom's governorates to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of his accession to the throne. This visit comes within the framework of His Majesty's keenness to maintain continuous communication with citizens in various regions of the Kingdom.
Jerash Governor Firas Al-Faour confirmed the governorate's readiness to receive His Majesty the King, noting that the visit represents a national celebration and is His Majesty's first meeting with the people of the governorate after the parliamentary elections. Al-Faour explained that His Majesty will inaugurate a group of projects and royal gifts, and will hold a meeting with the governorate's dignitaries.
Al-Faour pointed out that each clan in Jerash will participate in welcoming His Majesty the King by presenting its own heritage. The reception will include songs and warm welcomes, in a scene that reflects the unity of the governorate and its love for His Majesty.
The people of Jerash and the official authorities have set up tents and special reception areas, and the governorate has been decorated to receive His Majesty the King. Citizens will also line the roadsides to welcome him as he passes by.
His Majesty's visit to Jerash is part of a series of visits that included the southern, central and Irbid governorates. His Majesty will continue his tours next Tuesday from Jerash, as part of the celebration of the Silver Jubilee of his accession to the throne.
