Arab Weather - Sultan Allan, representative of the clothing, fabrics, shoes and jewelry sector in the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, revealed a proposed plan to set an annual ceiling of 200 dinars per person for purchases via e-commerce.
Allan explained, according to statements he made on Friday, that the aim of this measure is to impose quantitative restrictions to ensure the consumer's right to shop locally or abroad within certain limits, based on a study of household spending for the year 2017, taking into account inflation rates. He stressed that the proposed ceiling covers the individual's need and exceeds it by 100%.
Allan pointed out that the demand for the clothing sector in the Kingdom is below average, although the sector’s performance is generally good, as goods are available at moderate or lower prices.
He stated that clothing imports in 2023 amounted to about 250 million dinars, most of which came from China at 42%, followed by Turkey at 24%, and then Egypt at 9%.
Allan stressed the need to support the sector by enhancing purchasing power, calling for a review of the sales tax imposed on the sector, which he described as high and negatively affecting its performance.
