Weather of Arabia - Scientists indicate that antioxidants activate the mechanism responsible for the growth of blood vessels in cancerous tumors. Nowadays, the consumption of nutritional supplements is increasingly common without consulting doctors, and although we believe that taking vitamin supplements is beneficial for nourishing the body, new research shows that there is a worrying link between these supplements and the formation of new blood vessels in cancerous tumors.
According to a report published by the British newspaper “Daily Express” , scientists at the “Karolinska Institute” in Solna, which leads research in the field of medicine, are concerned about the effects of vitamin and mineral supplements, and although known antioxidants, such as vitamin C, are considered safe to take when used as a supplement. Dietary through food, but new studies indicate that it is linked to the formation of new blood vessels within cancerous tumors.
Professor Martin Bergo, Professor in the Institute's Department of Biosciences and Nutrition , explained the results of his team's discoveries, saying:
“We have observed that antioxidants activate the mechanism responsible for the formation of new blood vessels in cancerous tumors, which is surprising because they were previously thought to have a protective effect as these new blood vessels help nourish tumors and promote their growth and spread.”
Professor Bergo added:
“There is no need to worry about antioxidants in everyday food, but it appears that most people do not need additional amounts of them and in fact, they can be harmful to cancer patients and individuals with a high risk of developing cancer.”
The team explained that antioxidants reduce levels of free oxygen radicals, but when ingested in additional quantities, the reduced level of free oxygen radicals activates a protein known as BACH1 , which leads to the formation of new blood vessels, which is known by classification as angiogenesis.
A recent study conducted by a research team led by Professor Martin Bergo revealed that vitamins A, C, selenium, and zinc all contribute to stimulating the formation of new blood vessels within cancerous tumors in the lung. Scientists believe that these results could be relevant to all types of cancer, and may contribute to the spread of cancer in the lungs. the body.
Ting Wang, a PhD student in Professor Bergo's team, said:
“Our study opens the door to thinking about more effective ways to prevent angiogenesis within tumors. For example, patients whose tumors express high levels of BACH1 may benefit more from treatments directed at inhibiting angiogenesis, especially compared to patients whose tumors express low levels of BACH1.” BACH1".
The results of this study were published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
