Auto giant Stellantis and French nuclear fuel company Orano announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint venture to recycle end-of-life and scrap electric vehicle batteries from their large plants in Europe and North America.
This memorandum strengthens Stellantis' position in the electric vehicle battery value chain by ensuring access to cobalt, nickel and lithium minerals, which are essential for this vital industry and energy conversion, according to the company's official website.
Alison Jones, Senior Vice President of Circular Economy at Stellantis, said:
“The UN Sustainable Development Goals underscore the need for solutions like those we have reached with Orano, aiming to address challenges related to natural resource scarcity and sustainability.”
Jones added:
“Based on our strategic plan (Der Forward 2030), Stellantis is committed to transforming its production and consumption model by adopting the circular economy concept.”
The joint project takes advantage of the Orano innovative low-carbon technology initiative, allowing the reuse of all materials from lithium-ion batteries and the production of new cathode materials, according to information provided by the specialized energy platform, and the project to recycle end-of-life electric vehicle batteries will also produce materials known as “black mass.” Or "active block".
These materials can be refined at the Orano hydrometallurgy plant scheduled to be built in Dunkirk in northern France, in preparation for reuse in electric car batteries and closing the economic cycle.
Thanks to its innovative pre-treatment strategy and advanced hydrometallurgical technology, mineral recovery can reach exceptional levels. Within the framework of the company's strategic plan (Der Forward 2030), Stellantis' Circular Economy business unit is working to enhance revenues generated from recycling operations, Including recycling end-of-life electric vehicle batteries, by up to 10 times, achieving more than two billion euros (about two billion and 117 million dollars) in total revenues from the circular economy by the end of the current decade (2030).
Stellantis aims to achieve carbon sustainability by 2038 across all its businesses, and the joint venture for recycling old electric vehicle batteries will support Stellantis partners, its aftermarket network and OEMs in intelligently managing old batteries and waste from large factories, according to the specialized energy platform.
Production of the old electric car battery recycling project will begin in the first half of 2026 by exploiting Stellantis assets and its existing facilities, and the investments made in developing the skills of Stellantis and Orano employees will contribute to creating sustainable opportunities for individuals in their new tasks.
