Arab Weather - Sinan Khalaf - A research paper that Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Lughbi participated in in the Health Research Forum at King Khalid University revealed that the southern regions of Saudi Arabia are the most affected by cancer.

According to the “120” program broadcast on the “Al-Ikhbaria” channel, a study showed an increase in the number of cancer cases by 133 percent in the southern region.

The Saudi city of Asir topped the list of cancer patients with 12,232 patients, followed by Jazan, Al Baha and Najran. A health research study confirmed that 4 types of cancer are prevalent in the southern region, with breast cancer being the most common type, followed by colon, endocrine and blood cancers.

The research enumerated the most prominent factors of cancer, including advanced age, obesity, exposure to radiation, smoking and chronic infections. Older people and people with a hereditary family history are most at risk.

A member of the research study team, Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Lughbi, said, "What caught our attention is the increase in the incidence of cancer in the southern region over two decades, while Asir alone recorded 230%."
