Arabia Weather - A recent study carried out by scientists at Keele University led to a solution to the mystery of the “strange holes” that appear in the depths of the oceans.

Scientists have confirmed that these "mysterious holes" are not always the result of methane leaking from under ocean floor sediments, but in some cases they are the result of the chaos caused by porpoises and sand snakes living in that area.

In his study of geology, Jens Schneider von Demling, of the University of Kiel, has shown that these holes are the work of porpoises that feed among the seafloor sediments. This causes disturbance to the sand snakes that live in this area, as they emerge from their burrows or become crowded, causing “holes” to form behind them.

“Our research results show for the first time that these depressions occur in direct connection with the habitat and behavior of porpoises and sand eels, and are not formed by rising fluids,” Schneider von Daimling reported.

“Our high-resolution data provide a new explanation for the formation of many craters on the North Sea floor,” he added.

Scientists explained that the previous explanation, which refers to the venting of fluids, is a logical explanation, but it may not be correct in all cases. Although the previous explanation remains appropriate in some scenarios, the vast majority of these holes cannot be explained by this mechanism. Accordingly, researchers conducted a comprehensive study to uncover the real answer, according to the scientific magazine “Science Alert”.
