In a joint study, Associate Professor at the University of Leeds, Diaa Wadud, addressed the potential impacts of self-driving cars and automated driving technologies on energy use and the environment, and presented some of their findings in an article entitled: “Will self-driving cars reduce energy consumption and make travel better for the environment?” ?”

The research concluded that the widespread use of self-driving cars may contribute to reducing energy consumption through various means, including on highways, as automated cars can interact with each other and then walk within close proximity to each other, and this can reduce the overall energy consumption. on roads by between 4 and 25%; Because vehicles that follow each other closely encounter less air resistance.

In addition, the interaction of vehicles with each other and with road infrastructure such as traffic management systems allows for better traffic flow, thus reducing congestion and reducing energy consumption by up to 4%.

The cars' automated eco-driving style, which controls speed and acceleration to achieve fuel efficiency, can also reduce energy use by up to 20%.
