Arab Weather - Cheesy Toast Shack in St Andrews is seeking to impose a £1 insurance on all purchases, due to its ongoing problems with seagulls stealing food from about 30 customers a day.

Tax to protect customers' sandwiches from seagulls

Cheesy Toast Shack owners complain about having to offer free replacements to dozens of customers every day, due to seagulls stealing food they've just bought. Kate Carter Large, one of the store's owners, says:

“Seagulls are very aggressive and really scary. We are a family business and I can’t sit and watch a sandwich get stolen without replacing it, so I will always offer another sandwich for free.

  • Failed attempts to confront

Kate admits that seagull attacks have “increased significantly” over the past three years. She and her husband Sam, who runs the shop with her, have tried several methods to deter the birds, including playing bird-of-prey noises and buying a bird-of-prey kite from Amazon, but all have failed.

Kate said:

“The birdsong wasn’t the perfect ambiance we wanted on the beach, and the kite we bought didn’t do anything – people would sit under it, and the seagulls would still attack.”

  • Insurance as an innovative solution

In an effort to deal with the situation, Sam has come up with the idea of an optional “gull insurance,” which he hopes will help offset some of the losses from bird theft, and provide a way for the company to support its humanitarian efforts. “Our business is family-run, Sam and I run it, our kids are here almost every day, and Sam’s cousin works in the kitchen,” Kate explained. “It’s not just a faceless business, and we want people to remember the kind gestures people make.”

The family hopes this new insurance will help ease some of the financial burden caused by the seagulls, and allow them to continue to provide excellent service to their customers.
