Arab Weather - The holy month of Ramadan coincides this year with the winter season astronomically, as it falls on March 1, 2025, and this is the first time that the holy month of Ramadan begins in the winter season in 24 years.

The beginning of Ramadan coincides with the period of borrowing

This year, the month of Ramadan also coincides with the period of borrowings, which is seven days; four days in February and three in March. This period is traditionally associated with heavy rains and cold weather, as mentioned in the famous story about the period of borrowings (learn about the story of the borrowings at the end of the report).

Has it ever snowed in the holy month of Ramadan?

Experts at Arab Weather said that the Kingdom actually witnessed snowfall in the month of Ramadan, and that was in January 1998, as the Kingdom was affected during the period of January 11-12, 1998 by a highly effective low pressure system accompanied by an extremely cold air mass of polar origin.

January 11, 1998 was cold, stormy and rainy. At the time of the Maghrib call to prayer on the same day, a polar air mass accompanied by a low pressure system rushed towards the Kingdom, causing heavy snowfall on all the highlands of the Kingdom. The snow continued to fall throughout the night and into the morning hours of the following day, January 12, 1998. The residents of the capital, Amman, woke up to snow accumulations that reached more than 30 cm at that time.

As we mentioned before, Ramadan this year falls in March, which is a very volatile month with many weather fluctuations, with high and low temperatures. The Kingdom has also been affected in many years in March by depressions that brought rain and sometimes snow. We look at Arab weather with optimism that this year March will be a month of rain and goodness, especially since it coincides with the month of goodness, the holy month of Ramadan.

The story of the borrowers

The borrowed days in the popular heritage are seven days; four days in February, and three in March, which is a period related to the well-known period of Saud (Saad Al Saud), where some warmth comes in February, especially at the end, as if they were originally from March, and then cold and rainy days come in March as if they were originally from February. It is associated in the popular heritage here in Jordan and the Levant with many popular proverbs and famous legends, such as the popular legend that says that man has turned the months of February and March into people who exchange dialogue, where February asks his "cousin" March in his last days to support him for three days to end a whole week of bitter cold and rainy winter that may raise the water level in rivers and floods, and he says to him: "March, my cousin, bring your three on four, let the old woman in the valley knock," and knock means flow in the river. According to the legend, the old woman angered February when she told her sheep that February no longer had rain and floods. She said to her sheep: “February the thug has passed and has not taken from me a single ewe or a tether, and we have beaten him on the back with the whip.” February felt insulted and that the old woman, who lives near a flood, was belittling him, as the story claims. This prompted him to increase the intensity of the rain and the bitter cold, and to ask March to help him with three more days, to increase the severity of winter and cold on the old woman and her sheep. The old woman and her sheep drowned in the river due to the bad weather conditions at that time.
